A specialist lawyer can take building companies to court for using negligence while building homes to hopefully reclaim some of the money to pay for the health problems that arise from asbestos infection. In some cases though, insurance companies refuse to pay their clients’ claims. How to Become a Lawyer

Now that we have all of the different types of lawyers out of the way, what exactly is involved with becoming a lawyer yourself? Obviously the first thing you’re going to have to do is attend law school. The process of getting in to law school and attending law school requires far too much explanation and won’t be covered in this article. If you’re interested in learning more about going to law school, we recommend you do more research. Once you’ve graduated law school, there are many different routes you can take to advance your law career.

The most popular option for new lawyers to take is to get a “internship” at an existing law firm. Newly appointed lawyers will be able to watch experienced colleagues work through cases. It is during these internships that lawyers begin to specialize. Law degrees don’t require any knowledge of specialization, but instead require knowledge of all types of law. It is impossible for a lawyer to learn all of the implications of all laws in the land. When a lawyer goes to work at a specialty firm, they are choosing to follow a particular path of law that will allow them to fight cases in that area. It may seem foolish to specialize in one specific area of law, but specialization always trumps general knowledge. A general lawyer without much direction isn’t going to have the skills to master any one type of case. Once out of law school, it is best to pick a path and stick to it.

Where to Seek Legal Counsel

More than likely, you stumbled across this page because you are looking for a specific type of lawyer. Because there is so many different types of lawyers on the web and in your hometown, finding the right one for your needs can be next to impossible. We hope you can take some form of advice from the list given above to determine what type of lawyer would best suit your tastes and needs. That is really the first step.

Once you have figured out what type of lawyer is best for your case, you can work towards hiring one. There are plenty of options on the table for picking a good lawyer. The option that we would recommend above all others is the use of the Internet. Lawyers that take the time to set up websites and make connections with their clients, instead of just plastering a phone number on a park bench, are generally more trustworthy. Do your best to find a lawyer that is out to work for your interests, not the interests of their wallet.

If you have no idea what type of lawyer days you need, we recommend opening up your phone book and looking for legal counsel aid programs. If you live in the southern United States, you may have heard of a company called “1-800-Ask-Gary ” a toll-free lawyer recommendation service. Services like these will advise people in the event of an accident what their next step should be. Because many people don’t have the time to learn all the ins and outs of the wall world and what it is they need to do after an accident, toll-free lawyer recommendation services such as the one mentioned above can be a great help.

Even if you don’t know where to begin seeking legal counsel, calling any law office in your local area, preferably one that you think may have some ability to help you, will yield results. If the law office you call is unable to help your claim, they will forward you to an appropriate office.

Law is a very big world and there are a lot of branches. In my opinion, you should actually sit down and jot down your interests and then decide what you want to go with. This is about your career and no matter how much I advice, it will be futile until you actually sit down and evaluate your situation.

Hope that helps.

Steven, I can already see the force in your communication!

It wouldn’t be right for me to tell you what lawyer to become. It is purely based on your interest, but if your question is in relation to your traits, then you are good to go as a criminal lawyer. Lot of arguments and debates involved there. One thing though, never get carried away by debates and arguments, or you may end up with wrong judgement. Always be just. Good luck mate.

Depends on what kind of facts you want to prove, because of the fact that many majors require to prove facts. Also it depends on what or who you want to prosecute. For intence if you want to prosecute criminals then you should check out Criminal Law. I hope that answered your question.

We are three ladies who have missing son’s since Nov.2004,Feb.2005 and March,2005. All are connected and we have been told our son’s are dead. We are unable to get any help from law enforcement.

We want to file a civil case against Bartow County Georgia. We have already gotten lots of proof they have not tryed to solve these cases. Have lied about lots of things and are trying to make us stop what we are doing. By this I mean that have made threats. Any way we need some one who has the balls to stand up to these people. Money is not important to us but we were hoping a $50.000.000 law suit might help us get some media coverage. I know they will try to buy us off, but we are all three want our son’s remains where we can put them to rest. Is there someone out there who can take our case?

Thank You,

I have recently become employed with a company that is looking to help lawyers with their work loads, and continuing education (which is needed for them to keep their licenses). Being a new business, I would appreciate your in put on what types of educational CLE’s seminars and tutorials would be highest in demand. The State could be Florida, New York, Michigan and California. So far, first move has been Foreclosure Defense, trying to keep people in their homes. After this venture is fully realized, I wonder what next would be the most popular? If you have any suggestions, I would certainly appreciate it. Will admit, the other types of attorneys I have contacted lately seemed to be numerous Insurance, Personal Injury, and Collections/Mortage Lender type of attorneys, however Criminal, Civil, Family, Real Property and Corporate (it being the last..) are also fairly popular. Most unique, a Patent Lawyer, Maritime Lawyer, Aviation Lawyer and one for individuals on Death Row. These were very rare, but out there, to add to the types of law an attorney can practice. Thanks.

Tyler,

Ina all honesty, Criminal Lawyer is not the department I would pick up. The deception is more in that area. However, since you have chosen that topic, here are some pointers to you.

Why I would like to be a criminal lawyer –

1. I believe in justice and fighting for it.
2. The world is becoming more decpetive and money hungry.
3. Lawyers, especially in the criminal field are becoming more and more corrupt.
4. In recent times, there have been a lot of cases where victims have been denied justice because of a few money/power hungry people.

I want to change the above. I know being alone, I cannot do much, but I want to get the ball rolling. After all someone has to start somewhere to clean the dirt.

Tyler, develop on the above and you should have a good essay.

Good Luck!

I am right now trying to narrow down the best and worst law collages to go to.Another thing is the amount of money you must pay in order to get the right education to graduate from the collage.Wish me good luck.

should i opt for arts or commerce?
and which colleges are there in india for becoming a good lawyer
and what subjects are most important which i should focus on for becoming a criminal defence lawyer in India?

Shivani,

I suggest you go for Commerce and that will give you wider exposure to more practical subjects than arts.

Becoming a criminal defense lawyer in India is not as challenging as you believe to be. If you can tell me where you reside, I can probably pull up a list for you.

Good Luck

Shivani, you are in 9th grade and you still have good time. I am glad to hear you want to be an honest lawyer and deliver justice to people. Given the condition of India currently, we need people like you.

However, something tells me you should also look into the section of human rights. Human Rights lawyer have an edge over normal criminal lawyers because of the very term “human rights”.

As of now, there is nothing you have to do, except that read books of great leader who have fought for justice and human values.

Also, keep close touch with the political world. Corruption and red tapism definitely has a lot to teach us.

Good luck again.

Shivani October 27, 2009 at 8:36 am

the human rights section….nice….could you tell me something about it…?

well,i would like to pick that section provided you help…!!

Well, human rights lawyers have an edge over other types, in their war for justice. If you want to know more, study this character – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teesta_Setalvad , a lady I respect from my heart for her courage and honesty. It is not a joke to fight a deviated government.

and what about political science,?if i take commerce,i have no pl. science, which is 1 of the most important subjects.

Reply

Shivani October 28, 2009 at 10:59 am

can you tell me that what do i do?
the main subject in this field is supposed to be political science, but then pol. science is not there in commerce ,whch you adviced me to take.

Reply

Political Science, sure can help, but is not a must to pursue law. I still advice you to go with commerce, but if Political science is a must, then Arts maybe the option for you.

With Law, it is all about practice. Once you are done with your course, and get your membership from Bar association, do 2 things –

1. Join a recommended Law firm and stick to your senior whenever you can.
2. Subscribe to Weekly’s, Monthly’s and Supreme court rulings and any other mags and keep yourself updated.

Good Luck!

Hello,

I am a 23 year old, 1st grade teacher in the first year of a two year program called Teach For America. I have aspirations to study law at a Catholic university, preferably the University of Notre Dame due to their Human Rights focus. I also would like to do the Peace Corps before I enroll in law school.

My question is, is law school a good option for me? I want to always be engaged in human rights and never limited to how much action I can take. I believe being a lawyer affords me this opportunity. I will always be able to teach by nature, but having a law degree will enable me to fight for particular issues in direct and conventional ways. I am just not sure if a law degree actually enables an individual to do this.

Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Enjoy,
Sean

Hi,
Im currently 17 waiting for school to start and in 3 years time, i will be holding a diploma of visual communications and media design. However i have a strong interest and determination in becomming a full fledge lawyer. I have always wanted to be a attorney or a criminal defense lawyer. I believe there are alot of people out there who are convicted wrongly and many who have been denied justice. Is it possible for me to get enrolled into a law school after my diploma? Although most law schools do not need any prerequisite courses for admission, can i use my GPA + the given LSAT test to get admitted into law school? Please advice!

As long as your goal is justice, you are good to go. Since you are 13 years old, you still have a lot of time. With time and experience, your aspirations also change and evolve. Observe your interests as you go ahead.

I’ve been thinking lately that I should fulfill my childhood dream of becoming a lawyer. I now realised that there are quite a number of fields. I am no idea of which would be best for me. I need some sugesstions. I like to analise things, prove things, give reasons for perspectives and pursuading people, I like dealing with children, hate dealing with thieves and other criminals and I am soft hearted but strong minded. Any suggestions for me. Thanks.

Maybe you should consider the Human Rights section. That way, you can avoid the criminals and focus on fighting for the downtrodden section of the society. The likes you have mentioned are not unique in the legal world. Every Lawyer, no matter what department has to hone these “skills”.

I believe Human Rights will be good for you. This is one department I see has almost always been “honest” in their work.

Good Luck!

Perhaps you can try family law? Actually you can try getting youself into law school first, and if im not wrong, in the first year you’d learn all the basics of law and everything. Perhaps when you’re more farmiliarised with everything, then you’ll have a clearer view of what you really want. :D

I am a tenth grade student and I am working on a research paper on how to achieve my goal of becoming a lawyer. I am not sure I would like to become a lawyer, but I am looking at the pros and cons of doing so. I want justice and honesty, but am not sure what kind of lawyer I would want to become. Civil? I want to be a lawyer for a greenhouse business which my parents both work at.
What lawyer position would you suggest?
If I decided to become a lawyer what courses would I need to take?
Are you willing to give me some advice on this? Thank you so much!

Hi Connie,

You will have to major in arts with subjects like sociology, political science etc. It will help you gain a lot of insight into the workings of real world, which you are gonna need for later. As to what kind of lawyer, I can’t really suggest you one. I understand you like to be just and honest, but every branch of law requires it to be in it’s fundamentals. If you can tell me more about your interests, maybe I can suggest something. Also, read the other comments above. It surely will help.

I am 24 years old with 3 years of college and 3 years of military service. I am now interested in studying law. If I choose to pursue a career in Law at this time in my life, being 24 years old, what is the probability of sucess in that field for me? Also, if I were to pursue a career in Law, will there reasonable amounts of time to engage in any other types of intrest?

Reply

admin July 2, 2010 at 6:12 am

Lakeysha, at 24, you are still young enough to take on law career. The success in this field is not tied to your age, but your experience. Even if you complete you law degree by 27 or 28, the 5 years after that will decide wheteher you will be good or not. To answer your second question, a Lawyer’s profession is just like any other, and so it depends how you organize yourself and incorporate the other important areas of your life. To start with, a weekly holiday where you will literally cut off from all your clients. 2 Vacations a year, where you and your family can enjoy quality time in peace…and more.

The first thought that came to my mind is a copyrights infringement lawyer, the specialist who looks into digital art rights. If that is what you have in mind, then I think you have a good future. The piracy industry is too big for one person to handle, and they sure can get some help.
